Yet Another Duallie

1. Introduction
What happens when you cross a hardware geek and
a very cool deal on CompGeeks.com? You get yourself yet another dual processor
setup here at home. Yes that’s right – having a dual XEON
system based on the SuperMicro P4DCE+ wasn’t enough for me. How
could I resist a dual Pentium III motherboard being sold for a measly
$29.95? Heck that’s basically a week’s lunch money! (Ok maybe
a little less than a week’s lunch money here in New York City).
So what am I exactly talking about you might ask? In case you did not
know about the deal – CompGeeks was getting rid of an apparently
large inventory of ACorp 6A815EPD motherboards for an insanely low $29.95.
If the deal is still up, you can find the sale here.
If it is no longer available – sorry. The 6A815EPD gave me the opportunity
to do a little fileserver upgrade here at home. We had been using an AMS
gBox case as a small fileserver and it was about time to get something
a bit more powerful. Please note that I have no affiliation with CompGeeks.com
– I just think they’re a cool place to get odds and ends.
1.1 Purpose
The following pages will reveal all the steps that
I took in constructing my fileserver based around the ACorp 6A815EPD.
It is an article that is as much about the system as it is about the motherboard.
We’ll also dig into some reasons as to why one would want a dual
processor setup as opposed to a single processor machine or even a hyperthreaded
system like the upcoming Pentium 4 processor. A more detailed look into
what makes multiprocessor systems so special will have to wait for another
day since that is an article in itself. So without further ado, let’s
get started shall we?
