Remember the 440BX chipset? That chipset was available
for a number of years and had a reputation for reliability and solid performance.
This past year, we’ve seen the 845 chipset build a similar reputation
for the Intel Pentium 4 lineup. When the 845 was coupled with support
for DDR, things started to looked a bit more rosey for Intel. As Pentium
4 prices have fallen this past year, popularity for systems built around
the processor have similarly gone up. Most Pentium 4 boards sold these
days are based either on some variant of the 845 or a SiS chipset solution.
Today, we’ll be looking at a motherboard from ABIT based on the
Intel 845GE which is the latest integrated graphics/chipset solution from
Intel that supports the new HyperThreading features of the 3.06GHz Pentium
4 Processor. I personally have had a fondness for ABIT motherboards since
my first enthusiast board was manufactured by ABIT. You’ve probably
seen a number of reviews out on the net for ABIT’s high end MAX
series of motherboards, however not everyone needs these high end boards.
Does the BG7E offer a good alternative to the MAX series of motherboards?
Let’s find out.
