Hardware Overview
The diNovo Media Desktop consists of three
separate units – the
Logitech diNovo Keyboard, the Logitech MX900 Cordless Optical Mouse
for Bluetooth, Logitech MediaPad, and the Logitech Bluetooth Wireless
Hub.
Logitech diNovo Keyboard
The following are pictures of the diNovo Keyboard:
The keyboard has a very smooth surface
and a slim, low profile. The keyboard has a clean layout – not as cluttered as many other
keyboards. Logitech chose a minimalist approach to added enhanced function
keys. The keys are similar to what you will find on Apple keyboards
and on many laptops/notebooks. If you’re familiar with Microsoft
keyboards, then it’ll take a short amount of time to get used
to this keyboard.
The keyboard has a set of enhanced keys common to many keyboards nowadays.
On the upper left hand corner, there are buttons to put the system
to sleep, launch your web browser, your default email program, and
a search program or website.
On the upper right hand side, you can control your system volume by
increasing the volume, muting the volume or decreasing the volume.
The lower right contains the media keys – a
Media button that will launch either the Logitech Media Desktop software
application
or your own media player of choice. There are media related controls
below the Media button.
The function keys on top of the keyboard
serve multiple purposes which you can control via the function lock.
Someone has finally found the
wisdom in making sure the function keys default to their original purposes
as opposed to the new enhanced settings. If any of you have ever used
a Microsoft Multimedia keyboard or earlier Logitech keyboards – then
you will know what I am talking a bout. After every reboot on those
keyboards, I would always need to press the function key because Alt-F4
didn’t work properly. The F4 had been remapped to the enhanced
setting. You won’t find that problem here.
When you turn the keyboard over, you’ll
find the connect button that lets you pair up the keyboard with the
Logitech Bluetooth Wireless
Hub. There is the battery door covering the location where you would
insert four AA batteries. Logitech bundles a total of 6 Duracell AA
batteries and a set of rechargeable AA batteries for the mouse.
Logitech MX900 Cordless Optical Mouse for Bluetooth
The Logitech MX900 Cordless Optical Mouse
continues the standards set forth by the Logitech MX700 mouse. In
fact, it’s hard to
discern any difference at all between the two devices. They feel the
same – have the same set of buttons and work exactly the same.
Why bother changing something that already works quite well? The only
difference lies with the use of Bluetooth as the communications medium
for the mouse.
The package came with the mouse for right
handed users. Has anyone seen a lefty mouse by any chance? I’m
just curious!
Logitech places navigational buttons along
the left hand side of the mouse meant for easier web navigation.
There are “Cruise Control” buttons
on the top and bottom of the scroll wheel allowing users to quickly
scroll through long documents at a set pace. Below the wheel is a button
to switch between all the active programs on your desktop.
The real benefit of the Logitech MX900 mouse continues to be in the
high resolution optical sensor and in the fast data throughput. You
can easily use this mouth in business applications and also in fast
paced gaming.
Here is a picture of the underside:
Logitech MediaPad
The Logitech MediaPad is a unique numeric
keypad. At first glance, I thought the MediaPad was simply a detached
numeric keypad. However,
it’s far more powerful than that. The MediaPad serves as a remote
control to your PC’s multimedia capabilities. You can launch
the Logitech Media Desktop application which resembles the Microsoft
Windows Media Center Edition interface. The MediaPad switches between
numeric keypad mode, directional keys, and a simple calculator.
There is a LCD screen on top of the keypad that shows the current
date and time. It also receives messages from the PC system showing
you when people log onto MSN Messenger. You can also receive email
notifications on the MediaPad and have a customized greeting sent to
you when you start the computer.
The underside of the MediaPad has an identical connect button and
a battery door covering the well that houses two AA batteries.
Logitech Bluetooth Wireless Hub
The Logitech Bluetooth Wireless Hub functions as a Bluetooth Hub and
as a Rapid Charging Base for your MX900 mouse. The front of the base
has a connect button that shines blue and allows you to connect your
Logitech Keyboard and Mouse to your system. The hub can pair up to
seven Bluetooth devices including the ones on your desktop thus really
giving you five more pairings at any given moment in time.
