Usage

The Samsung YH-999 Portable Media Center is remarkably easy to use – especially if you have all the right accompanying components around you. These include a Windows XP system or a Windows XP Media Center Edition PC with loads of media content (e.g. MP3, WMV, and ASF files). If you have a regular Windows XP system, you'll need the latest version of Windows Media Player – version 10. Windows Media Center Edition 2005 systems already have WMP 10 included.

The Portable Media Center is another part of the grand Microsoft Digital Media plans. Content resides on Windows Media Center PCs which can then be played back on Windows Media Center Extender systems or Portable Media Center devices. Media can be retrieved from a variety of sources – personal collections, online collections or recorded from live TV. The PMC is flexible enough to handle scenarios that don't quite fit this picture – especially if you have videos not in Windows Media formats. This is where Windows Media Player comes in helping to facilitate the transition of making your content fit into the Microsoft grand scheme of things. Although it is scary for the possibility of having Microsoft dominate the digital media scene, it is pretty interesting to see how all of this works because it actually does work pretty well.

Charging the YH-999

The YH-999 PMC has a built in Lithium battery providing approximately 10 hours of audio playback and 3 hours of video playback. Your mileage may vary of course depending on your actual daily usage. The YH-999 has a DC-In Connection port on the left hand side of the device allowing you to connect the included charger. Unfortunately, you are not able to charge the YH-999 using the USB port. This would have been ideal for all the road warriors out there that this device targets. Who wants to carry yet another charger? Or better yet – design it in the same fashion as the Apple iPod – use the same cable to connect to either the PC or to a small adapter unit. It takes approximately four hours to fully charge the YH-999. The power button glows orange while the device is charging and then turns green once it's fully charged.
