Setup

To use the Samsung YH-999 Portable Media Center, you'll obviously need to provide content to the device. This is made possible by using a system with Windows XP and Windows Media Player 10. If you do not have Windows Media Player 10, you can install it from the included CD. Once Windows Media Player 10 is installed, connect the Samsung YH-999 to your PC using the USB cable. Windows XP will install the proper hardware drivers for the device which you can see here listed in the Device Manager.

Windows Media Player 10 is greatly improved from previous versions of Windows Media Player. This new version allows you to easily sync content to a variety of devices.

As we mentioned earlier, the YH-999 allows you to view content in the following file formats:

  • Video Files: WMV, ASF formats. If the video is not in WMV or ASF format, WMP will convert the file to the WMV file format during the synchronization process.
  • Audio Files: MP3, WMA formats
  • Image Files: JPEG format

There are a variety of ways you can sync files to your YH-999. You can select the Sync button on WMP and then drag and drop media files to the left hand side of the application. You can also select media files in your WMP media library and place them in your Sync playlist.

Once you're finalized your list of files to synchronize, press the Start Sync button. Once the synchronization process starts, you can see the progress on a file by file basis. If the video files are not in the WMV or ASF format, the files will be converted into the proper format at this point. Remember - conversion of video files can take quite a long time if you have large video files. The time that it takes to convert a video file varies on the processor speed and memory of your particular system. As an example - a 2 hour movie on our dual XEON 2.8GHz system took approximately 35 minutes to convert. Once videos are converted, the files are transferred to the device in no time thanks to the USB 2.0 interface.

If you have a Windows Media Center 2005 PC, you can utilize the Media Center User Interface to synchronize content with your YH-999. Users with MCE 2005 do not need to install any software since they already have Windows Media Player 10 installed. Once the YH-999 is connected, you can take synchronize content by going to the "More Programs" section of the interface:

The "Sync To Device" option will bring up the following set of screens.

Windows Media Center provides default synchronization settings for various media stored on your PC. You can synchronize media based on various parameters such as its rating, how old the content is, and how popular it is. If you're not happy with the default settings, you can remove then and add your own settings. Pressing the "Add More" button on the left hand side brings up the following menu:

You can customize settings for each major category:

You can also perform customizations from Windows Media Player 10. This is particularly useful if you want deeper customizations than what is provided via the MCE interface.

If you are synchronizing video content (such as downloaded movies or prerecorded television shows), remember that a MCE system will also need to transcode the videos down to size to fit onto a PMC which will take some time. However, one of the nice things that MCE 2005 provides is background transcoding of any videos that it knows will need to be sync'd to a PMC. Thus once you're ready to sync, there's a good chance that your content is already ready to be copied to the device without going through any transcoding process.
