Setup
The Lyra RD2780 interfaces with your computer via the USB port. You're better off if you have USB 2.0 on your PC. If you don't have USB 2.0 but only have USB 1.1, then transferring video files will sure take some time.
You can manage your audio files using the included MusicMatch software but you are generally better off using Windows Explorer and browsing the device as an external hard drive. Keep in mind that you will need to use a version of Windows that supports USB.
Content can be transferred to the device via two methods:
- USB connection
- Compact Flash cards
Upgrades
If you own a RD2780, then upgrading is a fact of life with this player. When the Lyra was first released, many of the features on the player were either disabled or incomplete. This has resulted in a constant barrage of firmware updates from RCA. Upgrading the firmware on the player is a fairly straightforward process. One needs to go the following URL for new firmware releases:
http://www.rca.com/lyra-avdownloads
The update is packaged into a standalone executable. Once the application launches, it will look for connected Lyra devices. The firmware update interface looks as follows:
Once the new firmware is transferred to the player, the device will reset and then ROM will be flashed on the device. A couple of device resets later, you're all set.
We should give RCA some credit for releasing updates on a fairly consistent basis yet knock RCA for not releasing a complete player to begin with.
