Software Overview
The first thing you’ll notice when it comes to the operating
system is that the Pocket PC V37 uses the Microsoft Pocket PC 2002
Operating System as opposed to the newer Windows Mobile 2003 found
in current devices. It’s unfortunate that ViewSonic did not package
the new OS with the V37 but most users may not actually mind. The differences
between Pocket PC 2002 and Windows Mobile 2003 are not substantial
enough for most users though the Zero Configuration Networking is a
good enhancement in Windows Mobile 2003. On the BrightHand forums,
it has been mentioned that ViewSonic will release an update to Windows
Mobile 2003 for the V37. It should be interesting to see how ViewSonic
proceeds with the update considering the kind of troubles that Dell
had with updating their Axims.
It would have been very interesting to see what Windows Mobile 2003
would be like on the V37 because the Pocket PC 2002 Operating System
is extremely responsive on the V37. I have to say that I prefer interacting
with the V37 over the iPAQ h2210 when it comes to responsiveness. Tap
on a button and menus pop up quickly. Applications launch fairly quickly
and navigating through the OS is an easy task.
The ViewSonic V37 comes bundled with your standard Microsoft applications
and not a whole lot more outside of that. What is interesting is the
bundling of the ViewSonic Visual Solutions Developer Tools CD. ViewSonic
is encouraging people to develop not only on the Pocket PC platform
but specifically those using the V37 PDA.
ViewSonic bundles a performance applet called
"Smart Battery" in the Settings section that allows users
to select the type of CPU performance/battery tradeoff. Here are some
snapshots of that:
