Setup

The Creative Labs Sound Blaster Wireless Music setup consists of the following steps:

  1. install the Creative MediaSource software and drivers on the PC where your music resides
  2. connect the Wireless receiver to the PC via the USB cable and configure it for your wireless network
  3. find a location for the Wireless receiver and then connect the appropriate speakers, home theater receiver, or headphones.

The MediaSource software installs easily onto your PC providing the appropriate drivers for the receiver and also the Organizer software for your music collection. The CD also installs the MediaServer application which will serve up your music to the receiver wherever it is located in your home.

If your wireless network is WEP enabled or if you do not use DHCP to assign IP addresses, then you will need to configure your receiver by connecting it to your PC via the USB cable. Once connected, launch the network setup application which will guide you through the steps of getting the receiver onto the wireless network. You will be asked to provide information such as the SSID and/or the WEP encryption key. The receiver will attempt to locate the wireless network and then save the settings internally. The Sound Blaster Wireless Music supports both 802.11b and g but it will not actually utilize 802.11g's throughput speeds.

I first tried to configure the receiver on my dual processor system but had a great deal of trouble getting the receiver to actually find the wireless network. After some time, I magically got the receiver to log into my wireless network which was WEP enabled using a 128 bit key. Unfortunately, I had playback issues with the receiver and the Media Server running on my duallie box. I installed the application onto my Shuttle box and then configured the receiver again. This time there were no difficulties in configuring the receiver. I suspect there were issues with the USB interface on my dual processor system which made for configuration nightmares. However there was no explanation as to why I was getting drop outs when the media server ran on my dual processor system but not when I was running it on a single processor Shuttle box.

The rest of the setup consists of building your music library using the Organizer software and then connecting your wireless receiver to a speaker system. The Creative Media Organizer is similar to many music organizers on the market today. I connected the Wireless receiver to my home theater which comprised of a Harman Kardon Receiver and Axiom speakers.
