My First Mod

Just like babies have their first step into a larger
world a few Saturdays ago, flungster and I took our first baby steps into
the world of modding computers. Pre-blizzard of 2003, but still during
the coldest winter in recent memory, I took my trusty micro-ATX desktop
case and trekked over to flungster's place for our first foray into sheet
metal cutting. In New York, you rarely have access to any sort of workshop
or toolbench. These are foreign concepts to the city-dweller. Instead,
you're lucky if you can fit any bench into your cramped apartment and
the only "shop" you visit is the deli down the street. Luckily,
flungster has a patio to work on which is why I went over.
The objective
The mission we were to undertake was to modify (i.e.
cut a big hole in) my computer case and install a plexiglas window. The
window would be further enhanced by including a hole for a 80 mm fan which
will increase airflow through the case and help cool down my 750 Mhz Athlon
processor. Okay, who are we kidding, nobody needs to cool a butt-slow
machine like mine, the whole goal of the project is not to increase airflow
but to make it look cool! To that end, I bought a small lazer LED that
project UV spectrum light. The fan is UV sensitive and will reflect a
neon orange when shined upon...
