Introduction
If you’ve been following WhiningDog over the last month, you’ll
have noticed a pattern of articles and reviews concentrating on dual
processor motherboards. What was the reason for all of this? I’ve
been in the process of upgrading my existing dual processor system to
a new one using the Intel XEON 2.66 GHz processor. To utilize the XEON
processor, I had two chipsets to choose from – the E7501 and the
E7505 from Intel. I stuck with the E7505 but then had to decide which
motherboard and what form factor I would purchase. In the end, the Supermicro
X5DAL-TG2 won out mostly because of its ATX form factor. The X5DAL-TG2
also won out because of my previous dealings with Supermicro products.
Their motherboards may not be user configurable but they certainly are
stable and that is far more important to me than any overclocking features
in a BIOS. As I was building the system, I realized it would be useful
to document all the steps that I took in both researching for a board
and accessories and actually building and testing the system itself.
There are those of you who would like to venture into building your own
computer (and perhaps a dual processor system like this) but may not
know where to start – well this article is for you. Sit back and
enjoy.
